Millennium Miles

Promoting Access for All in the Countryside

What are Millennium Miles?

- accessible countryside paths for disabled people

Millennium Miles can be found all across the UK. They are paths and trails that meet the BT Countryside for All standards so that

  • people with disabilities can choose places to visit in the countryside where they know they will be able to gain access;
  • countryside managers and landowners can promote the good work that they have done in making the countryside more accessible.

Follow the links at the foot of this page to see paths that have already been registered as Millennium Miles across the UK.

Tell us about other accessible paths

Information packs to enable you to register Millennium Miles are available by e-mailing, telephoning or writing to the Fieldfare Trust.

The BT Millennium Miles project ran between 2000 and 2002 with support from BT, the Countryside Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Countryside Council for Wales and the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland.

Fieldfare has continued independently to register Millennium Miles and collate information on accessible countryside venues in order to make this information available to disabled people.

The registration of the paths means they should be accessible, but please note that inclusion in this website does not constitute endorsement or guarantee by the Fieldfare Trust.

How accessible are Millenium Miles?

To qualify as a Millennium Mile a path must provide the levels of accessibility for disabled people set out in the BT Countryside for All Standards . These standards were established through the Countryside for All Advisory Group and are recognised as providing access for all in a wide range of countryside settings.

The information on these paths has been supplied to Fieldfare by the organisations responsible for the management of the paths, such as local councils and national parks. These organisations have undertaken access audits on the paths and have registered them with Fieldfare as meeting the standards.

If you have any problems using any of these paths or they do not comply with the standards in anyway please let us know – email us at info@fieldfare.org.uk and we will notify the managing organisation of any problems and may withdraw the Millennium Miles registration from less than fully accessible paths.

If you are aware of any other countryside paths which provide good access for disabled people Fieldfare would be pleased to hear about them. We can then let other disabled people know about them and help them enjoy more countryside opportunities. If you can arrange for the organisation managing a particular path to audit it and confirm it reaches the Countryside for All standard it will qualify as another Millennium Mile.
